Hockey expanded in the 1970s and one of the teams to emerge was the Atlanta Flames. Oddly enough they had to play western teams despite being on the east coast. The Flames were consistent but not phenomenal and year after year less fans turned out to the games. Perhaps the southern expansion wasn't right for the time and rather than extinguish, the Flames headed to Canada where they remain today.
